Calendar Days vs Weekdays vs Workdays
“Days” means different things depending on who is counting. A notice period in calendar days, a deadline in business days, and a pay calculation in working days can give three different answers for the same stretch of time. This guide defines each term, puts numbers on them, and shows where each one is normally used.

The definitions
- Calendar days: every day, weekends and holidays included — 365 in 2026.
- Weekdays: Monday to Friday — 261 in 2026.
- Business days: weekdays that aren’t public holidays. Which holidays count depends on the country, region, or organization.
- Workdays, or working days: the days a particular person or business is scheduled to work. For a Monday-to-Saturday job that is 313 in 2026.
The same two weeks, counted four ways
Take Monday, December 21, 2026 to Sunday, January 3, 2027, with December 25 and January 1 as holidays:

Where each one is used
- Calendar days: many notice periods, return windows, and interest calculations.
- Business days: shipping estimates, bank transfers, and many administrative deadlines.
- Working days: prorating pay, counting leave, and attendance.
- The wording of a contract or policy decides which applies; when it only says “days,” the agreement or local rules settle what that means.
Weekends that aren’t Saturday and Sunday
Not everyone’s weekend is Saturday and Sunday. Some countries use a Friday–Saturday weekend, and shift workers can have any days off. For those schedules, workdays are the only count that matches reality, which is why the Days Worked Per Year Calculator lets you tick any days of the week.

- Are business days the same as weekdays?
- Not quite — business days also leave out public holidays.
- Does a calendar-day deadline include weekends?
- Yes. Calendar days count every day.
- How many calendar days are in a year?
- 365, or 366 in a leap year.
- If a deadline falls on a weekend, does it move?
- Sometimes. Many rules move it to the next business day, but it depends on whatever sets the deadline.
- Is Saturday a working day?
- For a person or business scheduled to work Saturdays, yes. It isn’t a weekday, and usually isn’t a business day.
