Counting Workdays After Holidays and Vacation

Getting from “workdays in the year” to “days I actually work” is subtraction, but it is easy to subtract the wrong things. Holidays on weekends, holidays moved to another day, half days, and the difference between paid and unpaid leave all change the answer. This guide goes through each one.

Only subtract days you would have worked

A holiday or vacation day only reduces your workdays if it falls on a day you were scheduled to work. In 2027, December 25 falls on a Saturday, so it removes nothing from a Monday-to-Friday schedule — unless the employer gives an observed day off instead, in which case that weekday is the one to subtract.

The order of subtraction

  1. Start with the scheduled workdays for the year — 261 for Monday to Friday in 2026.
  2. Subtract the holidays that land on those days.
  3. Subtract paid vacation and other paid leave.
  4. Subtract unpaid days off.

With 10 holidays, 15 vacation days, and 2 unpaid days in 2026, that is 261 − 10 − 15 − 2 = 234 days worked, and 261 − 2 = 259 paid days.

Paid and unpaid time off

Paid holidays and paid leave reduce the days you work but not the days you are paid for. Unpaid leave reduces both. Keeping them apart matters for anything based on paid days, such as a daily rate, as opposed to anything based on attendance.

Half days and partial leave

  • Count a half day off as 0.5.
  • Convert hourly leave at your normal day length: 4 hours is 0.5 of an 8-hour day but 0.4 of a 10-hour day.
  • Leave that spans a weekend counts only its workdays: Thursday to the following Tuesday on a Monday-to-Friday schedule is 4 workdays.

Workdays After Time Off FAQ

Does a holiday on a Saturday reduce my workdays?
Not on a Monday-to-Friday schedule, unless your employer gives another day off in its place.
Should sick days be subtracted?
Yes, once taken — paid sick days like paid vacation, unpaid ones like unpaid leave. For planning ahead, many people use a typical number.
How do I count a week of vacation?
As the workdays in it: 5 for a Monday-to-Friday week, not the 7 calendar days.
What is an observed holiday?
A weekday given off when the holiday itself falls on a weekend — commonly the Friday before or the Monday after.
Can time off be more than my workdays?
Not within one year. If it adds up to more, some days were counted twice or fall outside the schedule.
