Convert volumes without mixing up US and UK units
Following a recipe from another country, checking a fuel tank, or measuring a container: type the volume, choose the units, and the result appears as you type, with the same volume in every other unit. The units are grouped as metric, US customary, and imperial (UK), and every gallon, pint, cup, and fluid ounce says which system it belongs to.
How to use the Volume Converter
- Type the volume to convert. Decimals, thousands separators such as 1,250, and negative values are accepted.
- Choose the unit you are converting from and the unit you are converting to. Swap units flips them and keeps your value.
- Read the result, the conversion factor, and the same value in every other unit. Copy Result copies the main conversion; Reset returns to the starting example.
The method
result = value × (liters per From unit) ÷ (liters per To unit)

The US and the UK kept different gallons: the US gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L), while the imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 L. Pints, cups, and fluid ounces are divided differently too — a US pint is 16 US fluid ounces, an imperial pint 20 imperial fluid ounces — so every one of these units is labelled US or imperial (UK) here. Metric units are exact multiples of the liter.

Limitations
- The cup is the US customary cup (8 US fl oz, 236.5882365 mL), not the 240 mL nutrition-label cup or the 250 mL metric cup.
- It can’t convert between volume and weight, such as cups of flour to grams, because that depends on the ingredient.
- Dry measures such as US dry pints and bushels are not included.
- Negative values are converted as ordinary arithmetic; results are shown to up to 10 significant digits.

- No. An imperial (UK) gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters — about 1.200949926 US gallons. The converter labels every gallon, pint, and fluid ounce as US or imperial so the two are never mixed up.
- Are US and UK fluid ounces the same?
- No. A US fluid ounce is 29.5735295625 mL and an imperial fluid ounce is 28.4130625 mL. A US pint holds 16 US fluid ounces, while an imperial pint holds 20 imperial fluid ounces.
- Which cup does the converter use?
- The US customary cup of 8 US fluid ounces, 236.5882365 mL. US nutrition labels round a cup to 240 mL, and some countries use a 250 mL metric cup; neither is included here.
- Is a milliliter the same as a cubic centimeter?
- Yes, exactly. 1 mL = 1 cm³, and 1 liter = 1,000 cm³.
- Can I convert cups of flour to grams?
- No. That depends on the ingredient’s density — a cup of flour weighs much less than a cup of water — so volume and weight can’t be converted into each other with a fixed factor.
