Savings Goal Calculator
Enter a savings goal, what you have saved so far, and a monthly contribution to see how long the goal takes.
Savings Goal Calculator calculates in your browser.
Estimate how long a savings goal takes
Saving for a trip, an emergency fund, or a down payment: enter the target, what is already set aside, and how much goes in each month, and the calculator shows how many months it takes, the amount still needed, the total you will contribute, and the month the goal would be reached. It counts contributions only — no interest or investment return is assumed — so the answer depends on nothing but the numbers you enter.
How to use the Savings Goal Calculator
- Type the savings goal.
- Type your current savings, or leave the box blank to start from $0.
- Type the amount you plan to add each month.
- Read the time to goal in years and months, the months to goal, the amount still needed, total contributions, and the estimated goal month.
The method
still needed = goal − current savings
months = still needed ÷ monthly contribution, rounded up
goal month = this month + months
Amounts are counted in whole cents, and a partial month is rounded up because it still needs a contribution — the last month may only need part of the usual amount, and the calculator says how much. The goal month assumes the first contribution is made one month from today and one each month after: a goal that takes 3 contributions, worked out in September, is reached in December.
| Plan | Time to goal | Still needed |
|---|---|---|
| $10,000.00 goal, $2,500.00 saved, $300.00/month | 2 years 1 month | $7,500.00 |
| $5,000.00 goal, $0.00 saved, $250.00/month | 1 year 8 months | $5,000.00 |
| $1,000.00 goal, $0.00 saved, $300.00/month | 4 months | $1,000.00 |
| $20,000.00 goal, $4,000.00 saved, $450.00/month | 3 years | $16,000.00 |
| $1,200.00 goal, $1,500.00 saved, $100.00/month | Goal reached | $0.00 |
Calculated on your device
- The calculation runs in your browser as you type; nothing is sent to a server.
- Savings goals, balances, contributions, and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored.
- The calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics, so what you enter isn’t captured in recordings.
Limitations
- No interest, investment return, inflation, or fees are included. For growth on a balance, see the Compound Interest Calculator.
- It assumes the same contribution every month, with the first one month from today. Irregular or one-off deposits aren’t modeled.
- The goal month is an estimate based on your device’s date, and it is not shown for plans longer than 100 years.
- The $ is a display label; the math is the same in any currency.

Savings Goal Calculator FAQ
- How is the time to the goal worked out?
- The calculator subtracts current savings from the goal, divides what is left by the monthly contribution, and rounds up to a whole month. $7,500 still needed at $300 a month takes 25 months — 2 years 1 month.
- Why is the number of months rounded up?
- Because a partial month still needs a contribution. $1,000 at $300 a month is 3.33 months, so the goal is reached in month 4 — and the last month only needs $100.
- How is the estimated goal month chosen?
- It assumes the first contribution is made one month from today and one more each month after that. A goal that takes 3 contributions, worked out in September 2026, is reached in December 2026.
- Does it include interest or investment growth?
- No. It only adds up contributions, so the result doesn’t depend on a rate that could change. To see how a balance grows with interest, use the Compound Interest Calculator.
- What if I have already saved enough?
- If current savings are equal to or above the goal, the calculator shows that the goal is already reached, with nothing left to save.
- What if the monthly contribution is $0?
- With nothing added each month and no growth, the savings never reach the goal, so the calculator says so instead of showing an endless number of months.
- Are the amounts I enter sent anywhere?
- No. The calculation runs in your browser as you type. The amounts, rates, and results are not sent to Looty Tools or stored, and the calculator area is masked from session-recording analytics. Refreshing the page clears it.
