The same script that takes four minutes to read silently can take well over five to read aloud — and longer still to deliver as a talk. Two different speeds
Silent reading is limited by how fast the eyes and brain process words. Reading aloud adds the physical work of pronouncing every word, which sets a slower ceiling.
Brysbaert’s 2019 meta-analysis estimated the average adult silent reading rate for non-fiction at 238 words per minute and the average reading-aloud rate at 183 words per minute. The Reading Time Calculator shows both.

Planning a talk from a word count
At 183 words per minute, a 1-minute slot is about 180 words, 5 minutes is about 900, 10 minutes about 1,830, and 20 minutes about 3,660. Treat these as upper limits for a script that will be delivered live.
- Pauses for emphasis, applause, laughter, or audience questions all add time.
- Slide changes, demonstrations, and video clips take time that no word count captures.
- Nerves often speed speakers up, while unfamiliar terms and names slow them down.
Scripts for audio and video
Podcast, voice-over, and video scripts vary widely in pace. A calm narration is slower than an energetic explainer. The 183 words-per-minute average is a sensible first estimate; for anything with a strict length, time a read-through at your natural delivery pace and adjust the script.
Writing for the ear
- Use shorter sentences — listeners cannot re-read a sentence they lost track of.
- Repeat key points; what works as redundancy aloud would feel repetitive on the page.
- Spell out numbers and abbreviations the way they should be spoken.
- Mark pauses in the script so the timing you plan is the timing you deliver.
