Transparency and output quality
This tool does not flatten onto white. When the browser's WebP encoder supports alpha, transparent pixels from the GIF's first frame can remain transparent — and because WebP's lossless mode with full alpha is at least as capable as GIF's 256-color, binary-alpha palette, nothing further is lost in that step even though nothing new is added either. The quality slider defaults to 90%. Lower values usually shrink the file and can introduce compression artifacts. WebP is often smaller for photographs, but complex graphics or high quality settings can reverse that.

Limits and known issues
- Input: GIF (.gif) only, up to 25.0 MB and 8,192 px per side.
- Encoding requires canvas WebP support. Unsupported browsers show a clear error and do not increment usage.
- WebP the format can be animated, but this converter doesn't produce that: it always writes a single static WebP from the GIF's first frame, so an animated source's remaining frames, timing, and loop are not carried into the output.
- Metadata is not preserved in the downloaded file.
