JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Output Format Should You Choose?

JPG, PNG, and WebP cover most everyday image needs, but each trades off compression, transparency, and compatibility differently.

JPG

JPG (JPEG) uses lossy compression and has no transparency support. It is universally supported and usually the smallest choice for photographs at a given visual quality.

PNG

PNG is lossless and supports full transparency. It is the safe choice for screenshots, graphics with sharp edges, and any image where you cannot afford to lose detail — at the cost of larger files for photos.

WebP

WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency, and is usually smaller than an equivalent-quality JPG or PNG. Its main tradeoff is that a small number of older or uncommon browsers and tools may not fully support it.

When to convert
