What Is Lorem Ipsum and Why Do Designers Use It?

Where it comes from

The text is adapted from “De finibus bonorum et malorum”, a philosophical work by Cicero written in 45 BC. The familiar opening, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet”, is a cut-off fragment of the Latin “dolorem ipsum” — “pain itself”. Over time words were shortened, altered, and shuffled, so the result is no longer real Latin.

It is often said to have been used by printers since the 1500s. That claim is hard to verify; what is well documented is that it spread widely in the 1960s on Letraset transfer sheets and later in desktop publishing software.

Why designers use it

• It has a natural mix of short and long words, so it fills lines and paragraphs the way real text would.
• Because it cannot be read, reviewers look at the layout — spacing, fonts, hierarchy — instead of commenting on the words.
• It is instantly recognisable as placeholder, so nobody mistakes it for final copy.

Alternatives

Some teams prefer placeholder text in their own language, especially when a layout will hold languages with much longer or shorter words than Latin. Others use realistic draft copy early on, so the design is shaped by the real message. Lorem Ipsum remains the default because it is neutral and universally understood.
