Work, pay & shifts
Paid Hours vs Hours Worked in a Year
A full-time year is 2,080 paid hours, but nobody works all of them. Paid holidays and vacation are paid without being worked, and unpaid leave is neither. Keeping paid hours and worked hours apart matters whenever the figure is used for something specific — an effective hourly rate, a productivity target, or a staffing plan.

Three numbers, not one
- Scheduled hours: weekly hours times weeks — 2,080 for 40 × 52.
- Paid hours: scheduled hours minus unpaid time off.
- Hours actually worked: paid hours minus paid time off and paid holidays.
A worked example
A 40-hour week with 15 days of paid vacation, 10 paid holidays, and 5 unpaid days, at 8 hours a day:
| Figure | Calculation | Hours |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled | 40 × 52 | 2,080 |
| Paid | 2,080 − 5 × 8 | 2,040 |
| Worked | 2,040 − (15 + 10) × 8 | 1,840 |
Which one to use
- Converting a salary to an hourly rate: paid hours, usually 2,080, because the salary pays for them.
- What each hour on the job earns: hours actually worked. $60,000 ÷ 2,080 is $28.85 an hour, but over 1,880 hours actually worked it is $31.91.
- Planning coverage or capacity: hours actually worked, because someone has to cover the time off.
- Checking against timesheets: hours actually worked, since timesheets record work.
Where sick days and overtime fit
Paid sick days count like paid vacation: paid, not worked. Overtime goes the other way — it adds hours worked, and paid hours too, usually at a higher rate — so a year with regular overtime can have more hours worked than 2,080.
Paid vs Worked Hours FAQ
- Are paid holidays counted as hours worked?
- Not as hours actually worked — no work was done — but they are paid hours. Whether they count toward overtime or other thresholds depends on the rules that apply to you.
- How many hours does a full-time employee actually work in a year?
- It depends on time off. With 25 days of paid holidays and vacation, a 40-hour week works about 1,880 hours.
- Does unpaid leave reduce paid hours?
- Yes. It reduces both paid hours and hours worked.
- Which figure should I use for an effective hourly rate?
- Hours actually worked, if the question is what each hour on the job earns; paid hours, if it is the hourly equivalent of a salary.
- Do paid breaks count as hours worked?
- Short paid breaks are usually already inside scheduled hours. Whether a break is paid is set by the employer and the rules where you work.
