How Many Work Hours Are in a Year?
Ask how many hours a full-time job works in a year and the answer is almost always 2,080. It is a convention — 40 hours a week times 52 weeks — and a useful one. But a calendar year isn’t exactly 52 weeks, so the actual number of weekday hours is usually a little higher. This guide explains both numbers and when each one is the right one.

Where 2,080 comes from
40 hours a week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. It treats the year as exactly 52 weeks and counts every one as worked, paid holidays and vacation included. That is why it is used to turn an annual salary into an hourly rate and back: $50,000 ÷ 2,080 = $24.04 an hour.
The actual weekday hours in each year
52 weeks is 364 days, so every year has one day more and a leap year two. When those days are weekdays, the year has more than 260 of them:
| Year | Weekdays | Hours at 8 a day |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 262 | 2,096 |
| 2025 | 261 | 2,088 |
| 2026 | 261 | 2,088 |
| 2027 | 261 | 2,088 |
| 2028 | 260 | 2,080 |
| 2029 | 261 | 2,088 |
| 2030 | 261 | 2,088 |
| 2031 | 261 | 2,088 |
| 2032 | 262 | 2,096 |
