Overnight Shift Handoffs: Midnight and Dates
Overnight shifts make two things harder at once: subtracting times across midnight, and knowing which day each shift is on when you compare it with the next. This guide focuses on the second problem — lining up a night shift with the shifts on either side of it — plus the two nights a year when the clock itself changes.

Which day does the next shift start?
A night shift that starts at 7:00 PM on Monday, October 12, 2026 ends at 7:30 AM on Tuesday. The day shift it hands to starts at 7:00 AM on Tuesday, not Monday — so the overlap is 7:00 to 7:30 AM on Tuesday. Comparing the times as if both started Monday would show the shifts back to back, with no overlap at all.
| Shift | Starts | Ends |
|---|---|---|
| Night | Mon, Oct 12, 7:00 PM | Tue, Oct 13, 7:30 AM |
| Day | Tue, Oct 13, 7:00 AM | Tue, Oct 13, 7:00 PM |
| Overlap | Tue, Oct 13, 7:00 AM | Tue, Oct 13, 7:30 AM |
When both shifts cross midnight
Two overnight shifts that start an hour apart — 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM — overlap from 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM: 7 hours. Moving both end times to the next day keeps the arithmetic simple: ends of 30:00 and 31:00, starts of 22:00 and 23:00, overlap 30:00 − 23:00.
The nights the clocks change
In the United States in 2026, clocks go forward at 2:00 AM on Sunday, March 8 and back at 2:00 AM on Sunday, November 1. An overlap window that includes 2:00 AM on those nights is an hour shorter or longer in real time than the clock times suggest. Handoffs at 7:00 AM are unaffected, but an overnight shift itself is 7 or 9 real hours on those nights instead of 8, and timekeeping systems usually record the difference.
Which day an overnight shift belongs to
- Many employers assign an overnight shift to the day it starts.
- Some split the hours at midnight, which matters when premiums or overtime are counted per day.
- A shift that crosses the end of a workweek may be split between two weeks for weekly overtime.
Recording overnight shifts in a spreadsheet
Store a full date and time for each start and end rather than a time alone. Subtracting date-times gives the right length and the right overlap across midnight, month ends, and year ends without any special cases.
Overnight Shift Handoffs FAQ
- How do I work out the overlap with a night shift?
- Put the next morning’s shift on the following day, then take the later start to the earlier end — 7:00 AM to 7:30 AM for a night shift ending at 7:30 AM.
- Which date does an overnight shift count for?
- Usually the date it starts, but some payroll systems split it at midnight. Check how your timesheets record it.
- Do shifts that both start at night overlap?
- Yes, if their times cross. A 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM shift and an 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM shift share 7 hours.
- Does daylight saving time change a handoff overlap?
- Only if the overlap window includes the hour the clocks change, around 2:00 AM. A morning handoff overlap is the same length.
- How should I write an overnight shift in a schedule?
- Include the end date, such as “Mon 7:00 PM – Tue 7:30 AM”, so no one has to guess which morning it ends.
