Moving Large Furniture Into an Apartment Elevator
Moving day in an apartment building runs on the elevator: booked times, padded walls, a lobby full of boxes, and one sofa that nobody measured. Most of the problems are predictable from a few numbers and a call to the building office. This guide covers booking and protection, getting long pieces lined up in the lobby, and the weight limit.

Before moving day
- Ask the building for its move rules: booking windows, a deposit, whether a freight or service elevator is available, and whether pads must be hung.
- Measure the door opening, the cabin between handrails, and the lobby in front of the doors.
- List your longest and widest pieces and check each against those numbers.
- Decide which pieces come apart — legs, headboards, desk tops — and pack the hardware in labelled bags.
- Tell the movers which pieces need standing on end, so the right people and straps are ready.
Getting long pieces lined up
A piece has to be square to the doors before it goes in, and in a narrow lobby the turn from the corridor is often the hard part. In a 40 in deep lobby with a 36 in door, a footprint 30 in wide can turn in only if it is no longer than about 47.28 in. A slimmer 20 in wide piece can be up to 67.38 in long.
Turning needs room on the approach side, too. While a 60 × 20 in piece pivots round the door jamb, no part of it is more than its diagonal — 63.25 in — from that corner, so that much clear lobby beside the doors, and that much cabin depth, keeps the turn inside the space you measured.
Protecting the elevator and the furniture
- Hang the building’s pads, or bring your own if allowed, before the first load.
- Wrap corners of furniture that will touch walls; the door frame takes most of the knocks.
- Use the door-hold button or key switch the building provides rather than blocking the doors with furniture.
- Keep the floor of the cabin clear for the dolly’s wheels.
Weight: the plate in the cabin
The rated load on the elevator’s plate covers everything riding: furniture, dolly, and people. A 300 lb piece with 350 lb of movers and dolly is 650 lb, about 31% of a 2,100 lb rating. That comparison says nothing about whether the move is safe, which depends on the elevator and the building — follow their rules, and use a freight elevator for heavy pieces if there is one.
When a piece won’t fit
- Take it apart further if the maker allows it.
- Ask about a freight elevator with a bigger door or a stretcher recess.
- Carry it up the stairs, checking the stairwell and landings first.
- For very large items, ask the building whether a hoist through a window or balcony is permitted, and use a company that does that work.
Furniture in Apartment Elevators FAQ
- Do I need to book the elevator for a move?
- Most apartment buildings require it, often with a time window and a deposit. Ask the building office well before the move.
- Can movers stand a sofa up in a passenger elevator?
- Often, if the door opening is at least as tall as the sofa is long and the cabin is tall enough. Check both numbers before the day.
- Why does the lobby matter if the elevator is big enough?
- Because a long piece has to be lined up square to the doors first. A shallow lobby can make that impossible even when the cabin would hold the piece.
- Should the movers ride with the furniture?
- Usually someone does, to steady it, and they count toward the rated load. If the piece fills the cabin, follow the building’s instructions for sending it up alone.
- Is a freight elevator always bigger?
- Usually its door and rated load are bigger, but not always its depth. Measure it the same way as a passenger elevator.
