Inclusive vs. Exclusive Day Counting
Ask how many days it is from the 1st to the 3rd and you will hear both “2” and “3”. Both are right — they answer different questions. This guide explains exclusive and inclusive counting and when to use each.

Two ways to count
- Exclusive, the default in most tools: count the steps from one date to the next. The 1st to the 3rd is 2 days. This is what subtracting dates gives.
- Inclusive: count every date in the range, both ends included. The 1st to the 3rd is 3 days — the 1st, the 2nd, and the 3rd.
The inclusive count is always the exclusive count plus 1.

The fencepost problem
This is the classic fencepost puzzle: a 10-meter fence with a post every meter needs 11 posts, not 10. Gaps and posts differ by one, just as the days between two dates and the dates in a range do.

- 4 days apart, or 5 days if you count both Monday and Friday.
- Is the start date counted?
- In an exclusive count, no — counting starts after it. In an inclusive count, both the start and end dates are counted.
- How do I count inclusively in a spreadsheet?
- Subtract the dates and add 1: =B2-A2+1.
- Which count do most calculators use?
- Most date calculators and spreadsheets count exclusively unless you ask them to include the end date.
- Why did two tools disagree by exactly one day?
- One of them is counting inclusively. Adding or removing 1 should make them match.
