How to Convert PDF to RTF Online
PDF to RTF turns a PDF into an editable Rich Text Format document you can open in Word, LibreOffice, or TextEdit. This is a best-effort, editable-document conversion — similar in philosophy to PDF to Word — not a pixel-perfect reproduction of the source PDF.

Why RTF instead of DOCX
PDF to Word (/tools/pdf-to-word) already covers the DOCX case. RTF is worth a separate tool because it opens reliably in a wider range of applications without requiring Word specifically — WordPad, TextEdit, and most other word processors read RTF natively. If the goal is quick, broadly-compatible editing rather than Word’s full feature set, RTF is often the simpler target; see /guides/rtf-vs-docx-vs-pdf for the fuller comparison.
When this tool helps
PDF to RTF works on text-based PDFs — documents that were created digitally and still contain real, extractable text. It uses the same extraction and table-detection engine as PDF to Word. It is not built for scanned paper documents; see /guides/pdf-to-rtf-scanned-pdf-limitations for that case.
How to convert PDF to RTF on Looty Tools

- The tool checks the PDF for extractable text before offering to convert.
- Select Convert to RTF.
- Download the resulting .rtf document.
What gets preserved
Extracted text with paragraph and line grouping, headings inferred from font size and layout, simple tables (see /guides/pdf-to-rtf-table-and-heading-detection), and page breaks between the original PDF pages.
Limits
- Maximum file size: 25 MB.
- Maximum pages: 50.
- Bold, italic, and text alignment from the source PDF are not preserved.
- Scanned or image-only PDFs are rejected — this tool does not perform OCR.
How to Convert PDF to RTF FAQ
- What kind of PDFs does this work on?
- Text-based PDFs that already contain real, extractable text — the same requirement as PDF to Word.
- Will the RTF file open in Word, LibreOffice, and TextEdit?
- It should. The output is a standards-compliant RTF document designed to open in any RTF-compatible word processor, including Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, and Apple TextEdit.
- Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
- No. Conversion runs locally in the browser, so the PDF is not uploaded to Looty Tools.
- Does it preserve bold, italic, or alignment?
- No. The underlying text extraction does not capture run-level bold/italic emphasis or paragraph alignment, so those are not carried into the RTF output — the same limitation PDF to Word has today.
- Does it work on scanned documents?
