How to Convert GIF to BMP in Your Browser

GIF exists almost entirely for one reason — simple animation — and that's exactly what doesn't survive a conversion to BMP. This guide explains what the conversion keeps, what it discards, and why treating it as "grab one frame" rather than a format upgrade will save you a surprise.

How GIF becomes BMP

  1. GIF stores its image data as a color-indexed, LZW-compressed bitstream; the decoder reads the palette table and pixel indices and reconstructs the first frame as a full raster of RGB pixel values.
  2. If the GIF contains multiple frames — as nearly every GIF used for animation does — only that first frame is decoded. The rest of the frame sequence, its timing, and its looping metadata are never read at all.
  3. GIF's palette tops out at 256 colors, and its transparency is a simple one-bit on/off flag rather than a range of opacity, so the decoded raster already reflects those limits before BMP enters the picture.
  4. That single decoded frame is written into BMP's uncompressed 24-bit structure, with any transparent pixels flattened to white in the process.

What changes when you convert

This is the one conversion here where the source format's entire reason for existing doesn't carry over at all. A 40-frame looping GIF becomes exactly one still BMP — there's no partial preservation, no way to pick a different frame afterward, and no BMP feature that could represent motion even in principle.

Color fidelity moves in a slightly counterintuitive direction: GIF's 256-color palette gets expanded into BMP's full 24-bit RGB space, but no new color information is created by that expansion — the BMP just represents the same limited palette with more bits per pixel. The result is a larger file, not a sharper or more colorful image.

GIF's binary transparency — a pixel is either fully see-through or fully opaque, nothing in between — is replaced with solid white wherever it was transparent, since BMP has no alpha channel to represent it.

When BMP is the right choice — and when it isn't

If what you actually have is an animated GIF, converting to BMP is very likely the wrong move unless you specifically want a single still frame for a document, thumbnail, or print layout. Treat it as "extract one frame," not as upgrading the file. If the motion itself matters, keep the GIF, or convert to WebP or AVIF instead — both support animation, unlike any static format on this site.

For a genuinely static GIF — an icon or diagram that happened to be exported in GIF's palette format — BMP conversion is reasonable when a legacy tool specifically requires it. Otherwise, TIFF is the better uncompressed target if you need to keep transparency, and ICO is the better choice if the end goal is actually an icon file.

Limitations and privacy

Know this before converting: animation is not preserved, period, and this holds even for GIFs with only a couple of frames. The 256-color ceiling was already a limit of the source GIF, not something this conversion introduces — expanding it into BMP's RGB space doesn't restore detail that wasn't there.
