How to Convert AVIF to JPG in Your Browser
AVIF is a highly efficient modern codec, but not every place you might need the image can open it — that’s usually why this conversion happens. This guide covers what changes when an AVIF file is decoded and rewritten as JPG, and where AVIF’s compression advantage actually goes.

How AVIF becomes JPG
- The browser’s AV1-based image decoder reads the AVIF container — after confirming it carries a genuine avif or avis brand — and reconstructs the compressed data into a full grid of pixel values.
- If the file is an animated AVIF (avis brand), only the first decodable frame is used; JPEG has no mechanism for storing multiple frames, so the rest of the sequence is set aside.
- Because JPEG has no alpha channel, the canvas is filled with white before the decoded pixels are drawn on top, so any transparent area is flattened rather than left undefined.
- The flattened pixel grid is then re-encoded as JPEG at your chosen quality setting, and the browser hands back a standard .jpg file.
What changes when you convert
AVIF’s AV1-based compression is generally more efficient than JPEG’s at a given visual quality, so re-encoding into JPEG usually means trading some of that efficiency away — expect the JPG to often, though not always, be larger than the source AVIF at a comparable quality setting.
Transparency is the most visible change if the AVIF has any: instead of see-through pixels, you get a flat white fill behind them, since JPEG simply has no alpha channel to carry it. There’s no way to choose a different background color in this conversion.
An animated AVIF collapses down to a single still. If the source was an avis sequence, whatever motion or multiple frames it held are gone in the JPG — only the first frame the browser decodes survives.
When JPG is the right choice — and when it isn’t
JPG is worth converting to when the destination genuinely can’t open AVIF yet — plenty of email clients, older apps, and some upload forms still don’t decode it — and when the image is a straightforward photo without transparency or animation you need to preserve.
If the AVIF has transparency you actually need, PNG is the better target since it won’t flatten it to white. If it’s an animated AVIF and you want to keep the motion, neither JPG nor most static formats will help — you’d need a target that supports animation. And if AVIF is already accepted where the file is going, there’s no reason to convert at all; you’d just be giving up its size advantage.
Limitations and privacy
AVIF decode support varies by browser and by how the file was originally encoded — a file that opens fine in one browser can fail to decode in another. When that happens, the tool shows a clear compatibility error instead of producing a broken or empty file, and no usage is counted. Files with HEIC-only brands, or non-AVIF files renamed to .avif, are rejected before decoding is attempted.
