How Packaging and a Dolly Change Appliance Clearance

An appliance is rarely the size on its spec sheet when it reaches your doorway. If it is still boxed, the carton adds inches on every side; if it is wheeled in on a dolly, it rides higher. Both can turn a comfortable fit into a miss, and both are easy to forget when you measure. This guide explains how each one changes the clearance and when to unbox.

Packaging adds to every side

Cartons, corner blocks, and foam add to the width, depth, and height. A fridge 36 × 30 × 70 in goes through a 32 in door upright with 2 in to spare. Boxed at 38 × 33 × 73 in, it is 1 in too wide: the box is deeper than the door is wide.

A dolly adds to the height

An appliance standing on a dolly or hand truck is lifted by the plate it stands on. A 78 in-tall fridge has 2 in of headroom in an 80 in door; on a dolly that raises it 2.5 in, it is 0.5 in too tall. Tilting it back on a hand truck to go under the frame makes its height less but its depth across the opening more, so it is not a free fix.

When to unbox

  • Unbox outside the tightest door if the box doesn’t fit but the appliance does — keep the corner protectors on.
  • Keep the box if the appliance may be returned; ask the retailer before discarding it.
  • Check for damage as you unbox, before it goes through the door.
  • Protect corners and the door frame with blankets once the carton is off.

Measure it the way it will travel

Ask the delivery team how they will bring it in — boxed or unboxed, on which dolly — and measure for that. For your own move, decide in advance where the carton comes off and where the dolly gives way to carrying.

Packaging and Dolly Clearance FAQ

How much does packaging add to an appliance’s size?
It varies by product; measure the carton itself or check the shipping dimensions on the product page, which are usually listed separately.
Does a hand truck make an appliance taller?
Standing upright on it, yes, by the height of the plate. Tilted back, it gets lower but takes more room across the doorway.
Should delivery teams unbox before bringing it in?
Many will if asked, especially when the box is what doesn’t fit. Agree on it before the day.
Do I still need the box after delivery?
Only if you might return it; some retailers require the original packaging for returns.
What protects an unboxed appliance through a tight door?
Moving blankets and corner guards — but remember they add a little to each side too.
