Age in Years, Months, and Days Explained
An exact age like “39 years, 6 months, 13 days” and totals like “474 months” or “14,442 days” describe the same span in different units. This guide explains how each is counted, why they don’t convert neatly into one another, and where each form is used.

Reading an exact age
Years count completed birthdays, months count whole months since the last birthday, and days count what is left. Because months vary in length, “6 months” can mean anywhere from 181 to 184 days, depending on which months they are.
One age, four forms
For someone born on March 14, 1987, on September 27, 2026:

Why the forms don’t convert exactly
- A month isn’t a fixed number of days, so months can’t be turned into days by multiplying by 30 or 30.44.
- Years have 365 or 366 days, so a day count isn’t an exact number of years.
- Weeks do divide days exactly — a week is always 7 days — which is why total weeks is simply total days divided by 7.
Where each form is used
- Babies’ ages are often given in weeks at first, then in months.
- Forms and records usually ask for completed years.
- Milestones such as 10,000 days old are counted in total days.

- 39 birthdays have passed, 6 whole months have passed since the last one, and then 13 more days.
- How do I work out someone’s age in months?
- Multiply completed years by 12 and add the completed months since the last birthday: 39 × 12 + 6 = 474.
- Why can’t I convert an age in days to years by dividing by 365?
- Leap years add extra days, so the division drifts. Count on the calendar instead.
- When is someone 10,000 days old?
- Add 10,000 days to the birth date. Someone born on March 14, 1987 turned 10,000 days old on July 30, 2014.
- How are total weeks counted?
- Total days divided by 7, with any remainder shown as days.
