Calendar Months vs. Total Days: Which to Use
“Three months” and “90 days” sound interchangeable but rarely are. This guide explains when a span is naturally measured in calendar months, when a day count is clearer, and what happens when you convert between them.

When calendar months fit
- Ages, anniversaries, and monthly billing, where the same day each month matters.
- Subscriptions and rent that renew on a set day of the month.
- Periods defined in months in their own terms, such as a six-month warranty.
When a day count fits
- Deadlines and notice periods stated in days, such as “within 30 days”.
- Trips, projects, and countdowns.
- Comparing spans, because every day is the same length.
Converting between them
There is no exact conversion. An average month is about 30.44 days (365.25 ÷ 12), fine for rough estimates but off by a day or two for any particular month. As a rule of thumb, count days for periods stated in days and calendar months for periods stated in months — and read the exact wording of any agreement that depends on it.

- Is a month 30 days?
- Only some months are. Calendar months have 28 to 31 days, about 30.44 on average.
- How many days are in three months?
- Between 89 and 92, depending on the months. January 1 to April 1, 2026 is 90 days.
- Is “30 days” the same as “one month”?
- Not exactly. Thirty days after January 31, 2026 is March 2, but one month after it is February 28 under the last-day-of-the-month rule.
- Which should I use to compare two spans?
- Total days, because every day is the same length.
