How Age Is Calculated From a Birth Date
Age sounds like a simple subtraction of years, but it depends on whether this year’s birthday has happened yet — and an exact age in months and days depends on how long each month is. This guide shows how calendar age is counted and how to check it by hand.

Completed years
Age in years is the number of birthdays that have passed. Subtract the birth year from the current year, then take off 1 if this year’s birthday hasn’t happened yet. Someone born on March 14, 1987 is 39 on September 27, 2026 — 2026 − 1987 = 39, and the birthday has passed — but only 38 on March 13, 2026.
Counting the months and days
- Start from the most recent birthday: March 14, 2026.
- Count whole months forward while you stay on or before the target date: March 14 to September 14 is 6 months.
- Count the remaining days: September 14 to September 27 is 13 days.
- The exact age is 39 years, 6 months, 13 days.
Why dividing by 365.25 goes wrong
Dividing the number of days alive by 365.25 gives a decimal close to the age in years — 14,442 days ÷ 365.25 is about 39.54 — but leap days don’t fall evenly across a lifetime, so near a birthday this shortcut can make someone a year older a day early or a day late. Counting on the calendar avoids that.
Checking with totals
- Total days: count every calendar day from the birth date — 14,442 days in the example.
- Total months: 39 years × 12 + 6 months = 474 months.
- Total weeks: 14,442 ÷ 7 = 2,063 weeks and 1 day.

- How do I calculate my age in years?
- Subtract your birth year from the current year, then subtract 1 if your birthday hasn’t happened yet this year.
- Does the time of birth matter?
- Not for calendar age, which goes up at the start of the birthday. The Age Calculator works with dates only.
- Why doesn’t my age in days divide evenly into years?
- Years have 365 or 366 days, so the number of days per year of age varies.
- How old is someone born on the last day of a month?
- The month is counted as complete on the last day of each shorter month: someone born on January 31 is exactly 1 month old on February 28 (or 29).
- Is chronological age the same as legal age?
- Usually, but some legal rules set their own conventions — especially for February 29 birthdays. Check the rule that applies if it matters.
