WebP to AVIF processes files locally in your browser.

What WebP to AVIF conversion does

Convert a WebP image to AVIF directly in your browser, with adjustable quality. Encoding uses the browser canvas API and is verified as a real image/avif download before it reaches your downloads folder.

How to convert WebP to AVIF

  1. Choose a WebP file.
  2. Adjust AVIF quality if needed.
  3. Select Convert & download.
  4. Save the .avif file from your browser downloads.

Why use this conversion

AVIF can shrink UI graphics and photos for sites that already serve modern image formats.

Transparency and output quality

Transparent pixels from the source stay transparent when the browser AVIF encoder supports alpha. This tool does not flatten onto an arbitrary background before encoding. The quality slider defaults to 90%. Lower values usually shrink the file and can introduce compression artifacts. Smaller files are not guaranteed for every source image.

Privacy and local processing

  • Processing occurs locally in the browser.
  • Files are not uploaded to Looty Tools for conversion.
  • Converted files remain on your device.

Limits and known issues

  • Input: WebP (.webp) only, up to 25.0 MB and 8,192 px per side.
  • Canvas AVIF encoding is Chromium-first today. Unsupported browsers show a clear error instead of a mislabeled download, and usage is not recorded for a failed conversion.
  • Animated WebP: only the first frame is converted to AVIF. Animation is not preserved, and exact frame selection depends on your browser's decoder.
  • Metadata is not preserved in the downloaded file.

WebP to AVIF FAQ

Why convert WebP to AVIF?
AVIF can shrink UI graphics and photos for sites that already serve modern image formats.
Can every browser create AVIF?
No. Canvas AVIF encoding is Chromium-first today. The tool probes encoding support and verifies the download is image/avif — unsupported browsers get a clear error instead of a mislabeled download.
Does AVIF output keep transparency?
Transparent pixels stay transparent when the browser AVIF encoder supports alpha. This tool does not flatten onto an arbitrary background.
What happens with an animated WebP file?
Only the first frame is converted. Animation is not preserved, and exact frame selection depends on your browser's decoder.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Conversion runs locally in your browser and does not upload your file to Looty Tools servers.
What is validated before conversion?
The file must actually be a WebP — the tool checks the RIFF/WEBP signature bytes, not just the filename or extension, before decoding.
