Why Blank Lines Appear in Copied Text
Copy text from a PDF, an email, or a web page and paste it into a plain text box, and you often get blank lines where there were none — or far more of them than you expected. This guide explains where those blank lines come from, so you can decide which ones to remove.

Paragraph spacing becomes blank lines
In documents and web pages, the space between paragraphs is usually formatting, not text. When the content is copied as plain text, that visual gap is often represented by an extra line break, which shows up as a blank line.
PDFs
A PDF stores text as positioned lines, not as paragraphs. Copying from it can produce a line break at the end of every visual line and blank lines wherever the layout had gaps, such as around headings, images, or page breaks.
Email and web pages
- Email clients often wrap plain-text messages and add blank lines between quoted sections.
- Web pages separate paragraphs, list items, and sections with spacing that may paste as one or more blank lines.
- Lines that contain only a space or tab look blank but are not empty, which is why some tools miss them.
Deciding what to remove
Blank lines between list items are usually noise. Blank lines between paragraphs may be worth keeping if you need the paragraphs to stay visually separate. Remove all of them for lists and data; for prose, consider whether you need to restore paragraph breaks afterwards.
