Remove Blank Lines in Word, Excel, and Code Editors
Most programs can remove blank lines, but each one does it differently — and some methods are easy to get slightly wrong. This guide covers the usual approach in Microsoft Word, Excel, and code editors, and when a dedicated tool is quicker.

Microsoft Word
In Word, each press of Enter creates a paragraph mark, so a blank line is an empty paragraph. In Find and Replace, the special code ^p stands for a paragraph mark: replacing ^p^p with ^p removes one empty paragraph between paragraphs, and repeating the replacement removes runs of several.
This does not catch lines that contain only spaces, which need to be cleaned up first.
Microsoft Excel
- Go To Special: Home → Find & Select → Go To → Special lets you select blank cells, which you can then delete.
- Filtering: filter a column for (Blanks), select the blank rows, and delete them.
- Check the result: a row that looks empty may contain a space, and deleting rows based on one column can remove data in other columns.
Code editors
Editors that support regular expressions can find lines that are empty or contain only whitespace with a pattern such as ^\s*$ and replace them. The exact syntax, and whether the line break is included in the match, varies between editors, so check the preview before replacing all.
When a dedicated tool is quicker
For a one-off list or block of text, pasting it into a blank-line remover is faster than building a search pattern, and it treats whitespace-only lines as empty automatically. For structured spreadsheet data, use Excel’s own features so rows and columns stay aligned.
