Why Area Conversions Use Squared Factors
Converting an area with a length factor is one of the most common unit mistakes: multiply square meters by 3.28 and the answer is off by more than a factor of three. This guide shows why area factors are squared, and why volume factors are cubed.

An area is a length times a length
A square meter is a square 1 meter on each side. Each side is 3.280839895 feet, so the square covers 3.280839895 × 3.280839895 = 10.76391042 square feet. The length factor is used twice, once for each direction.
The classic mistake
Multiplying 50 m² by the length factor 3.28 gives 164 — but 50 m² is really 538.1955208 ft². The mistaken answer is too small by a factor of about 3.28, because one of the two directions was never converted.

Volumes are cubed
The same idea extends to three dimensions: a volume factor is the length factor cubed. A foot is 12 inches, so a cubic foot is 12 × 12 × 12 = 1,728 cubic inches.

- 144, because a square foot is 12 inches by 12 inches.
- How many square feet are in a square yard?
- 9.
- Why isn’t 1 square meter equal to 3.28 square feet?
- That uses the length factor once. An area needs it twice: 3.28 × 3.28 ≈ 10.76.
- How many square centimeters are in a square meter?
- 10,000 — 100 × 100.
- What if I only know a room’s dimensions?
- Convert each dimension to the target unit, then multiply them to get the area.
