Scan to PDF: Fixing Sideways or Upside-Down Pages

Why phone photos come out rotated
A phone camera doesn’t know which way is "up" for the document you’re photographing — it only knows which way the phone itself was held. A page photographed while holding the phone sideways (common for a landscape document, or for fitting a large page into frame) is captured that way, and there’s no universal standard that guarantees every viewer corrects it identically.
How the rotate controls work
Each page in the list has its own Rotate left and Rotate right controls, independent of every other page. This matters because a multi-page scan can easily mix orientations — some pages shot in portrait, one shot in landscape by accident — and each page needs its own fix, not a single rotation applied to the whole batch.
What rotation does to the page size
Rotating a page 90 or 270 degrees swaps its effective width and height before it’s placed on the PDF page. A wide photo rotated to portrait becomes tall; this is accounted for automatically in the page-size and fit calculations, so you don’t need to change your page-size settings just because one photo is rotated.
When to reshoot instead of rotate
Rotation only corrects 90-degree steps. If a photo is tilted at a smaller angle — a crooked, not sideways, shot — rotating it won’t straighten it. Retaking that one photo is faster than trying to compensate for a small-angle tilt.

- Each photo is captured independently, so how the phone happened to be held for that one shot determines its orientation — it’s common for one page in a batch to differ from the rest.
- Does rotating a page lose any image quality?
