Milliseconds to Seconds and Minutes Explained
Milliseconds — thousandths of a second — show up wherever timing needs to be precise: timeouts in code and settings, lap and reaction times, audio and video timestamps, and network ping. This guide shows how to turn them into seconds and minutes and what common values look like.

The two conversions to know
Going the other way, multiply: 2.5 seconds is 2,500 ms, and 3 minutes is 180,000 ms.
- Milliseconds to seconds: divide by 1,000.
- Milliseconds to minutes: divide by 60,000 (1,000 × 60).
Common millisecond values
| Milliseconds | Seconds | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | 0.25 | 0.004166666667 |
| 500 | 0.5 | 0.008333333333 |
| 1,500 | 1.5 | 0.025 |
| 30,000 | 30 | 0.5 |
| 60,000 | 60 | 1 |
| 90,000 | 90 | 1.5 |
| 3,600,000 | 3,600 | 60 |
Where you will meet milliseconds
- Software settings and code: timeouts, delays, and animation durations are often given in ms, so 30000 means 30 seconds.
- Sport and reaction times: a sprint split of 10.52 s is 10,520 ms.
- Audio and video: frame and sample positions are often shown in milliseconds.
- Networking: ping and latency are reported in ms, where 20 ms is 0.02 seconds.
Writing a result as minutes and seconds
A converter gives decimal minutes, such as 1.5 minutes for 90,000 ms. To write it as minutes and seconds, keep the whole minutes and multiply the fraction by 60: 0.5 × 60 = 30, so 1 minute 30 seconds, often written 1:30.
Smaller than a millisecond
A microsecond (µs) is a thousandth of a millisecond, and a nanosecond (ns) a thousandth of a microsecond. The Time Unit Converter stops at milliseconds; to convert microseconds, divide by 1,000 first.
