How Many Days Are in a Year? 365, 366, and 365.2425

Common years and leap years
A common year has 365 days. A leap year adds February 29 for 366 days. The extra day keeps the calendar in step with the seasons, because the Earth takes a little more than 365 days to go around the Sun.
The Gregorian leap-year rule
- A year divisible by 4 is a leap year — 2024 and 2028 are.
- Except a year divisible by 100, which is not — 1900 and 2100 are not.
- Except a year divisible by 400, which is — 2000 was a leap year.
The rule gives 97 leap years every 400 years, for an average of 365.2425 days.
Year lengths in other units
Astronomers use the Julian year of exactly 365.25 days, for example to define a light-year. The Gregorian average is what the calendar achieves over its 400-year cycle. The time it actually takes from one spring equinox to the next is about 365.2422 days.

Months run from 28 to 31 days. Dividing the Gregorian average year by 12 gives an average month of 30.436875 days, but no real month is that long.
