How to Subtract Lunch From Hours Worked
Taking a lunch break off a day’s hours is simple subtraction until the formats get mixed — hours and minutes on the time clock, decimals on the timesheet. Most mistakes come from treating minutes as if they were hundredths. This guide shows the subtraction in both formats, gives lunch lengths as decimals, and lists the errors that most often change a total.

In hours and minutes
Subtract the minutes, borrowing an hour as 60 minutes when needed. 8 hours 45 minutes minus a 30-minute lunch is 8 hours 15 minutes. 8 hours 15 minutes minus a 45-minute lunch needs a borrow: 7 hours 75 minutes − 45 minutes = 7 hours 30 minutes.
In decimal hours
Turn the lunch into hours first — minutes ÷ 60 — then subtract. 8.75 hours minus a 30-minute lunch is 8.75 − 0.5 = 8.25 hours. A working day from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 9 hours, so a 1-hour lunch leaves 8, and a 30-minute one leaves 8.5.
Lunch lengths as decimals
| Lunch | In decimal hours | An 8-hour day becomes |
|---|---|---|
| 15 minutes | 0.25 | 7.75 hours |
| 20 minutes | ≈ 0.33 | ≈ 7.67 hours |
| 30 minutes | 0.5 | 7.5 hours |
| 45 minutes | 0.75 | 7.25 hours |
| 60 minutes | 1 | 7 hours |
Three mistakes that change the total
- Subtracting 0.30 for a 30-minute lunch. It should be 0.5; using 0.30 leaves 12 minutes too many.
- Reading 8.45 on a timesheet as 8 hours 45 minutes. As a decimal it is 8 hours 27 minutes.
- Rounding the lunch before subtracting. Taking 20 minutes as 0.3 gives 7.7 hours instead of about 7.67.
When a break isn’t subtracted
Some workplaces count a meal break as working time — for example when you can’t leave your post — and some count short rest breaks but not a longer meal. Which breaks come off depends on your employer’s policy and the rules where you work; subtract only those.
