How to Convert JPG to WebP in Your Browser
JPG and WebP are both lossy formats, so switching between them isn’t a quality upgrade — it’s a trade of universal compatibility for smaller, more modern web delivery. How JPG becomes WebP
- The browser decodes the JPEG’s DCT-compressed data into a full grid of RGB pixel values — the same step any image viewer performs to display the photo.
- That pixel grid is drawn onto an in-browser canvas, which then encodes it as WebP using the browser’s own lossy encoder at the quality setting you chose.
- Before the file downloads, the converter checks that the encoder actually returned an image/webp blob rather than silently falling back to another format — a real, but occasionally missed, browser behavior — so what you save is always genuinely WebP.
What changes when you convert
WebP’s encoder is lossy, just like JPEG’s, so this conversion is really a second lossy compression pass layered on top of the first. Raising the WebP quality slider (50–100%, default 90%) keeps more of the pixel data the JPEG decoder handed it, but it can’t bring back detail JPEG’s own compression already discarded.
File size can move in either direction. WebP’s codec is often more efficient than JPEG’s at comparable visual quality, but a high WebP quality setting on a detailed photo can still land larger than a heavily compressed JPG — compare the actual downloaded file rather than assuming WebP automatically wins.
Nothing changes about transparency, because there’s nothing to change: JPG has no alpha channel to begin with, so the WebP output stays fully opaque. Image dimensions are unaffected by the format switch, and metadata simply isn’t carried into the new file.
When WebP is the right choice — and when it isn’t
WebP earns its place when the destination is a website or app you control — page load speed benefits directly from its smaller typical file sizes, and it also supports transparency and animation if a later source needs those. If you’re optimizing images for a CMS, product gallery, or blog post, converting your JPG library to WebP is a reasonable default.
It’s the wrong move when the file needs to travel somewhere you don’t control the software: email attachments, older desktop applications, and some print or design pipelines still expect JPG specifically. In those cases the size savings aren’t worth the risk of the recipient not being able to open the file at all.
Limitations and privacy
WebP encoding support in the browser is required for this conversion to work — most current browsers handle it without issue, but if canvas encoding is unavailable, the tool shows a clear compatibility error rather than downloading a mislabeled file. Encoding is a one-way trip: there’s no way to recover the original JPEG bytes from the WebP once it’s written.
Conversion happens entirely client-side. The JPG is decoded, redrawn, and re-encoded inside your browser, and it’s never uploaded to Looty Tools’ servers at any point.

- Can WebP do things JPG can’t, like transparency or animation?
- Yes — WebP supports an alpha channel and animation, features JPG never had. This particular conversion won’t add transparency to a JPG source since there’s none to preserve, but it’s part of why WebP is treated as a broader-purpose format.
- Is my photo sent anywhere while it’s being converted?
