How to Convert GIF to AVIF in Your Browser
A GIF and an AVIF file sit at opposite ends of image compression: GIF is an 8-bit, 256-color palette format from 1987, while AVIF is a modern video-codec-based format capable of full color and HDR. This guide explains what actually happens — and what doesn't — when you move a GIF's pixels into that much more capable container.

How GIF becomes AVIF
- The browser reads the GIF's color table and decodes the first image block's LZW-compressed pixel data — GIF stores every pixel as an index into an 8-bit palette of at most 256 colors, never as direct RGB values.
- Any pixel marked with the GIF's transparent color index becomes fully transparent; GIF has no concept of partial transparency, only on or off.
- Those already-quantized pixels are expanded onto an in-memory canvas as full RGBA data, then handed to the browser's native AVIF encoder, which applies AV1 intra-frame coding at your chosen quality.
- The output is checked for a genuine image/avif signature before download; if the source GIF was animated, only this first decoded frame is used.
What changes when you convert
This is the largest capability jump of any pairing in this tool: GIF's 8-bit, 256-color palette and binary transparency give way to AVIF's nominal support for full 24-bit color, smooth alpha gradients, and even HDR. But it's important to be realistic about what conversion can and can't do — it cannot restore detail the GIF's palette already threw away. The converter re-encodes the same limited set of colors more efficiently; any banding or posterization visible in the original GIF will still be visible in the AVIF, just stored in a smaller file.
AVIF encoding here comes from your browser's own built-in encoder rather than a bundled WASM library, so transparency support is delegated to whatever your browser's AVIF encoder does with alpha — generally reliable, but not a hard guarantee — and encoding is most consistent in Chromium-based browsers.
If the source GIF is animated, only its first frame is converted; this tool does not attempt to preserve GIF animation in any form, and the AVIF result is always a single static image.
When AVIF is the right choice — and when it isn't
Converting a static GIF to AVIF makes sense when you want to keep serving that image on the web but at a much smaller file size than GIF's LZW compression achieves — AVIF's video-codec compression handles flat colors and simple graphics efficiently even though the source was already palette-limited.
It's the wrong tool if the GIF's animation is the whole point — this converter, like every source-to-AVIF path here, only ever keeps the first frame, so an animated logo or reaction GIF will lose its motion regardless of target format. And if you actually need broader, more forgiving browser compatibility than AVIF currently offers, WebP is worth considering instead.
Limitations and privacy
The AVIF output can only contain the visual information the GIF's 256-color palette already preserved — no color depth is added back. Animation is never carried over, and AVIF alpha support depends on the browser's own encoder rather than being guaranteed.
Conversion runs entirely in your browser; the GIF file is never uploaded to a server. Files up to 25MB and 8192px per dimension are supported.

- Will converting my GIF to AVIF improve its image quality?
- No. The AVIF file can only contain the same colors and detail the GIF's 256-color palette already captured — conversion makes the file smaller, not more detailed.
- What happens to an animated GIF?
- Only the first frame is converted. This tool does not preserve GIF animation in any target format, so the AVIF result is always a static image.
- Why is GIF's transparency different from AVIF's?
- GIF only supports binary transparency — a pixel is either fully visible or fully transparent, with no partial values. AVIF can represent smooth alpha gradients, but that extra capability isn't used here since the source pixels were never more than fully-on or fully-off.
- Does file size actually shrink much when a GIF becomes an AVIF?
- Often yes, since GIF's LZW compression is far less efficient than AV1-based AVIF encoding for the same pixel data, even though the underlying color information stays the same.
- Is my GIF uploaded anywhere to be converted?
- No. Conversion happens locally in your browser, and the file is never sent to a server.
