Mental shortcuts
- 10% off: move the decimal point one place left to get the savings. On $129 that is $12.90, so you pay $116.10.
- 20% off: double the 10% figure. On $129 you save $25.80.
- 25% off: divide by 4. On $80 you save $20 and pay $60.
- 50% off: halve the price.
- 30%, 40%, and so on: multiply the 10% figure. 30% of $80 is 3 × $8 = $24.
Is a bigger percentage always a better deal?
Not necessarily. 25% off $120 costs $90, while 40% off $160 costs $96 — a bigger percentage on a higher starting price can still cost more. Compare the final prices, not just the percentages.
“Up to” sales
“Up to 50% off” means some items are 50% off and others less. Check the discount on the item you actually want.
Savings at Common Discounts FAQ
- How much is 20% off $50?
- $10 off, so you pay $40.
- How much is 25% off $60?
- $15 off, so you pay $45.
- What is the fastest way to work out 10% off?
- Move the decimal point one place left to get the savings: 10% of $35.50 is $3.55.
- Is 50% off the same as buy one, get one free?
- Only if you want two of the same item. Buy one, get one free halves the price per item when you take two, but you still pay full price for the first.
- Why is my sale price a cent different from the store’s?
- Rounding. Some registers round the savings, others round the sale price, and some round each item separately.
