How Many People Can Sit at a Dining Table?
A dining table seats as many people as its edge can give a place to. Count the edge each person gets — about 24 in as a working minimum, more for comfort — and you have a realistic number; squeeze chairs side by side and you have the most that will physically fit.

Edge per person, not table area
Two tables with the same area can seat different numbers. What matters is the length of edge people sit at and how much of it each person gets. About 24 in (61 cm) per person is common planning guidance for a working minimum; 28–30 in (71–76 cm) gives elbow room. A place is never narrower than the chair in it, so wide armchairs set their own spacing.
Seats at common table sizes
| Table | At 24 in each | At 28 in each | 18 in chairs side by side |
|---|---|---|---|
| 60 × 36 in rectangle | 6 | 6 | 10 |
| 72 × 36 in rectangle | 8 | 6 | 12 |
| 72 × 40 in rectangle | 8 | 6 | 12 |
| 84 × 40 in rectangle | 8 | 8 | 12 |
| 96 × 42 in rectangle | 10 | 8 | 14 |
| 48 in square | 8 | 4 | 8 |
| 48 in round | 6 | 5 | 8 |
One place at each end of a rectangle when the end is at least one place wide; no corner legs; 18 in wide chairs.
Comfortable or squeezed
The squeezed figure is a ceiling, not a plan: chairs touching, elbows in, and nobody able to pull a chair out without bumping a neighbour. It is useful for a one-off gathering. For everyday meals, plan on the comfortable count and treat anything above it as occasional.
The ends and the corners
- A rectangle’s ends usually take one person each, once the end is at least one place wide; two at an end needs about twice that.
- Corner legs take their width off both ends of every side, which can cost a place per side.
- On a square table the corners decide everything: a 48 in square seats 2 a side at 24 in, but only 1 a side at 28 in.
Check it at the table
- Measure the table edge, and the width of the chairs at their widest point.
- Look underneath for corner legs, a trestle, or a pedestal foot.
- Set the chairs out at the spacing you want and sit at the tightest place.
- Decide which count is everyday and which is for occasions.
Dining Table Seating FAQ
- How many people fit at a 6-foot dining table?
- A 72 × 36 in or 72 × 40 in table seats about 8 at 24 in of edge each — 3 a side and 1 at each end — and about 6 at a roomier 28 in.
- How much table edge does each diner need?
- About 24 in (61 cm) is a common working minimum and 28–30 in (71–76 cm) is more comfortable. Both are planning assumptions you can change, not standards.
- Can a 60 × 36 in table seat 8?
- Only squeezed. At 24 in each it seats 6 — 2 a side and 1 at each end. With 18 in chairs pushed side by side it holds up to 10, with no elbow room.
- Does a 48 in square table seat more than a 48 in round one?
- At 24 in each, yes: the square seats 8 (2 a side) and the round seats 6. At 28 in each the square drops to 4 because each side only fits one place, while the round still seats 5.
- Should I count the seats at the ends?
- When the end is at least one place wide and nothing underneath blocks knees, yes — one at each end. Ends against a wall or a bench seat don’t count.
