How Many Chairs Fit Around a Round or Oval Table?

Round and oval tables are easy to estimate — divide the edge by the space each person gets — but it is reasonable to ask whether the chairs really fit round the curve. They do, and the reason why tells you where the real limit is.

Start from the edge

A round table’s edge is π × its diameter: about 150.8 in for a 48 in table. At 24 in per person that is 6 places; at 28 in it is 5. An oval’s edge is close to the perimeter of an ellipse of the same length and width, which a 96 × 44 in oval puts at about 227.56 in — 9 places at 24 in.

Why chairs don’t collide on a curve

Push a chair in until the middle of its front edge touches the table, and that front edge lies along the tangent to the curve. Neighbouring tangents splay outward, so two chairs whose centres are at least a chair-width apart along the edge can’t overlap — on a circle or any oval. The squeeze people feel comes from shoulders and elbows, not the chair frames, which is why the space per person is the number that matters.

Where round tables lose places

  • Legs near the edge: a chair may have to sit between two legs rather than where the spacing puts it.
  • Armchairs: a wide chair sets the spacing, not the space per person.
  • Odd counts: 5 or 7 round a table is fine, but it leaves no straight run for a bench.

Lay it out before buying

  1. Cut a circle or oval of paper or cardboard at the table’s size, or mark it with tape.
  2. Set out the chairs at even spacing round the edge.
  3. Sit at two neighbouring places and check elbow room.
  4. Push each chair in to see whether it tucks under or stops at the apron.

Round and Oval Table Seating FAQ

How many people sit at a 54 in round table?
About 7 at 24 in of edge each, or 6 at 28 in. Its edge is about 169.65 in.
Is a 42 in round table big enough for 6?
Only squeezed. Its edge is about 131.95 in, which gives 5 places at 24 in each; 18 in chairs side by side fit up to 7.
Do chairs fit round a narrow oval?
Yes, as long as each place along the edge is at least a chair wide. Chairs pushed in to a curved edge fan outward, so their frames don’t overlap even where an oval curves tightly at the ends.
How do I work out an oval table’s edge?
Use the perimeter of an ellipse with the table’s length and width. A 96 × 44 in oval has about 227.56 in of edge; divide by the space per person for the number of places.
Why do round tables feel cosier than rectangles?
Everyone faces the centre and sits about the same distance from everyone else, and there are no corners or ends — so the same edge per person often feels more sociable, even if it isn’t roomier.
