How Many Curtain Panels Do I Need?
Ready-made curtains come in fixed panel widths, so in the store the real question is how many to buy. The answer comes from the width you need to cover, the fullness you want, and the width of one panel — then rounding up, because nobody sells a fraction of a panel. This guide works through it with examples.

The short answer
Work out the total finished width you need — the width covered times the fullness, plus any returns and overlap — and divide by one panel’s width. Round up to a whole panel, and for a pair that opens from the middle, round up again to an even number so both sides match.
Worked examples
| Width covered | One panel | Fullness | Panels | Fullness they give |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 64 in rod, pair | 50 in | 2× | 4 | 3.13× |
| 64 in rod, one side | 50 in | 2× | 3 | 2.34× |
| 64 in rod, pair, 3.5 in returns, 3 in overlap | 50 in | 2× | 4 | 2.97× |
| 200 cm rod, pair | 140 cm | 2× | 4 | 2.8× |
Why pairs round to even numbers
A 64 in rod at 2× needs 128 in, and 128 ÷ 50 is 2.56, so three panels would cover it. But a pair that opens from the middle with two panels on one side and one on the other looks lopsided and stacks unevenly, so the count goes to four. Curtains that all draw to one side can use the odd number.
When to buy one more pair
Look at the fullness the panels actually give. Two 50 in panels on a 64 in rod give only about 1.56×, four give about 3.13×, and six about 4.69×. If the minimum count gives less fullness than you’d like — common with narrow panels or heavy fabric — the next even count is the one to consider.
Check the label first
- Most labels give one panel’s width; a “pair” or “set of 2” is two panels.
- Some list the combined width of the pair — halve it for one panel.
- Use the finished width, not the fabric width before hemming.
How Many Curtain Panels FAQ
- How many curtain panels for a 64 inch rod?
- At 2× fullness with 50 in panels, four panels for a pair — two each side — giving about 3.13× fullness. Drawn to one side, three panels give about 2.34×.
- Do I need two curtain panels per window?
- For a pair that opens from the middle, at least two, and often four or more on wider rods. It depends on the rod width, the panel width, and the fullness.
- Should curtain panels be an even number?
- For a pair that opens from the middle, yes, so both sides match. One-way curtains can be odd.
- How many panels for a sliding glass door?
- Wide spans take many panels: a 116 in rod at 2× with 50 in panels needs 232 in, which is five panels drawn one way or six as a pair.
- What if the count gives more fullness than I wanted?
- Extra fullness looks richer and is normal with whole panels. If it is too bunched, try wider or narrower panels to land closer to your target.
