Curtains for Wide Windows and Sliding Doors
Wide windows and sliding doors multiply every curtain decision: the rod is long, the fabric adds up quickly, and the curtains need somewhere to go when they are open. A door you walk through also changes which way they should draw. This guide covers the panel count, the draw, and the hardware for wide spans.

Wide spans need a lot of fabric
A 96 in sliding door with the rod 10 in past each side needs a 116 in rod. At 2× fullness that is 232 in of curtain. With 50 in panels, that is 4.64 panels — five drawn to one side, or six as a pair, which gives about 2.59× fullness.
One-way draw for doors you walk through
A center-opening pair leaves curtain stacked on both sides of the doorway. For a slider, a one-way draw — all the panels stacking on the side away from the opening — keeps the walkway clear. The same 116 in rod drawn one way takes five 50 in panels, about 2.16× fullness, and the count can be odd.
Rods and track for long spans
- Long rods need center support brackets so they don’t sag; follow the rod’s instructions.
- Common adjustable rods reach about 120–170 in; longer spans may need a custom or connected rod.
- On a rod with center brackets, rings can’t pass the brackets — use bypass brackets or a track for a one-way draw.
- Ceiling track suits very wide spans and windows close to a corner.
Leave room to stack back
Open curtains bunch up at the ends of the rod. With six panels of heavy fabric, that stack can be well over a foot deep along the rod, which is why rods for wide windows and doors often extend further past the opening. If the wall beside the door is short, a lighter fabric or lower fullness stacks narrower.
Curtains for Wide Windows FAQ
- How many curtain panels for a sliding glass door?
- For a 96 in door on a 116 in rod at 2× fullness with 50 in panels: five drawn to one side, or six as a center-opening pair.
- Should sliding door curtains open in the middle or to one side?
- Often to one side, away from the opening, so the curtains don’t block the doorway when open.
- How long a rod do I need for a 96 inch slider?
- With 10 in past each side, 116 in. Common adjustable rods in the 66–120 in or 120–170 in ranges are worth comparing.
- Do long curtain rods need a center bracket?
- Usually, to stop sagging. The rod’s instructions say where; a one-way draw needs bypass brackets or a track.
- Why do curtains for wide windows need a longer rod?
- So the larger stack of fabric can sit beside the glass when open, instead of covering part of the window or door.
