Why Lower L/100 km Means Better Fuel Economy
Liters per 100 km tells you how much fuel a vehicle uses to cover a set distance, so a smaller number means less fuel. That sounds backwards to anyone used to MPG, but it has one big advantage: fuel savings line up directly with the numbers. This guide explains why, using what researchers call the MPG illusion.

Fuel per distance versus distance per fuel
MPG and km/L answer “how far does one unit of fuel take me?” — higher is better. L/100 km answers “how much fuel do I need for this distance?” — lower is better. Both describe the same vehicle, but only fuel per distance grows in step with the fuel you actually buy.
The MPG illusion
In 2008, researchers Richard Larrick and Jack Soll showed that most people misjudge MPG improvements. Going from 10 to 20 MPG looks like a smaller gain than going from 30 to 50 MPG, but over the same distance it saves far more fuel.

10 → 20 MPG saves 500 gallons over 10,000 miles; 30 → 50 MPG saves about 133.
Why fuel per distance is easier to compare
- Fuel used = distance × L/100 km ÷ 100, so 12,000 km at 6 L/100 km takes 720 liters.
- Halving L/100 km halves the fuel for the same trip.
- A drop of 1 L/100 km always saves the same fuel over the same distance, whatever the starting figure.
The US label shows both
Since 2013, the US fuel economy label has shown gallons per 100 miles next to MPG for exactly this reason — it is the US equivalent of L/100 km.

- Because fuel used depends on 1 ÷ MPG. At low MPG, each extra mile per gallon removes a larger share of the fuel.

- The US fuel-per-distance measure: 100 ÷ MPG. 25 MPG is 4 gallons per 100 miles.
