What to Do When a Sofa Won’t Fit Through the Door

A sofa stuck in a doorway is rarely a dead end. Most of the fixes are about changing one of the measurements — the door’s opening or the sofa’s size as moved — and knowing which one to change first saves an afternoon of shoving. This guide goes through the options in the order worth trying, with a worked example of how much each one changes the answer.

First, check which measurement is the problem

Take an 84 × 31 × 34 in sofa and a door that measures 30.5 in clear with the door open. As a box it is half an inch too wide whichever way you turn it: 31 in deep and 34 in high, both more than 30.5 in. Whether it can still go through tipped back depends on its diagonal depth, which is why that is the next thing to measure.

Each fix below changes a different number, so knowing whether you are short on width, height, or the turn in from the hallway tells you which fix to try.

Change the sofa’s size as moved

  • Unscrew the legs. On that 84 × 31 × 34 in sofa, 4 in legs bring the height to 30 in, and on its back it clears the 30.5 in door with 0.5 in to spare.
  • Take out every loose cushion and any removable back cushions.
  • Check whether the arms or back are designed to come off. Some sofas have bolt-on arms or a back that lifts off brackets; the manufacturer’s instructions will say. Don’t remove anything that is glued, stapled, or part of the frame.
  • Split a sectional or modular sofa into its pieces and check the largest one.

Change the door’s opening

  • Take the door off its hinges. The open door’s thickness and hinge side stop take up part of the opening; with the door off, measure again from frame to frame. In the example, a 32 in opening clears the sofa upright with 1 in to spare.
  • Prise off the door stops — the thin strips the door closes against — only if you are prepared to refit them; they usually add only a fraction of an inch on each side.
  • Use a different door. A patio or double door, or a wider back door, may avoid the narrow one entirely.

Change the route

If the door is fine but the turn into it isn’t, the problem is the space in front of the door. A hallway corner, a short landing, or a door near a wall can stop a sofa that would go straight through. Measuring that space, or bringing the sofa in through another room, often solves what looked like a door problem.

When to stop

  1. If the measurements say no in every position, with the door off and the legs off, believe them.
  2. Ask the retailer about a return or exchange before forcing it; damage from forcing a sofa is rarely covered.
  3. Ask about a model with a removable back or a modular version.
  4. For a sofa you are keeping, a furniture removal company can sometimes take a sofa apart and rebuild it, or lift it through a window or balcony — at a cost that is worth comparing with a replacement.

When a Sofa Won’t Fit FAQ

Does taking the door off really help?
It can, because the open door’s thickness and the hinge stop sit inside the opening. Measure the frame opening with the door off to know how much you gain.
Is it safe to stand a sofa on its end to get it through?
Many sofas can be stood on end and pivoted through a door frame, but that manoeuvre depends on the frame and the space either side. Protect the floor and the arms, and keep the weight off the back.
Will a delivery team take it back if it doesn’t fit?
Policies vary. Many retailers charge for returns of furniture that was delivered as ordered, so checking the path before buying is the cheaper fix.
Can I remove the arms from any sofa?
No. Only sofas built with bolt-on arms are designed for it. Look for bolts under the arm or in the instructions before reaching for tools.
Should I trim the door frame?
Cutting into a frame is a building job, not a moving trick. Try the reversible fixes first, and get advice before altering anything structural.
