Packing Paper Sheets vs Rolls: How to Estimate Quantity
Packing paper comes as pre-cut sheets in packs, as rolls, or by the pound, and the different labels make it hard to compare or to know how much to buy. They are the same material measured differently. This guide shows how to compare sheets with rolls by area, why smaller sheets need more than their area suggests, and how to turn either into a count you can plan with.

Comparing by area
A 24 × 36 in sheet is 864 square inches, or 6 square feet. A roll 24 in wide and 50 ft long is 24 × 600 = 14,400 square inches — the area of about 16.7 of those sheets. That is the comparison to make when one pack is sold by sheets and another by length.
Smaller sheets: more than the area suggests
Area is only half the story, because each item is wrapped on its own and a part-used sheet goes with it. An 18 × 24 in sheet is half the area of a 24 × 36 in one, so a dinner plate that takes 2 large sheets takes 4 small ones. Rounding up per item, twelve plates take 48 small sheets, or 53 with 10% waste.
When sheets get much smaller than the items, it gets worse: a sheet too small to go round a platter in one piece leaves gaps where pieces overlap.
| Sheet size | Area | Sheets per dinner plate |
|---|---|---|
| 24 × 36 in | 864 in² | 2 |
| 18 × 24 in | 432 in² | 4 |
Starting with 2 sheets of 24 × 36 in per dinner plate, scaled by area and rounded up for each plate.
Rolls: cut to the item
- A roll lets you cut a piece the size of each item, so small items waste less than with large sheets.
- Tearing a straight edge is harder without a dispenser or a cutting bar.
- For counting, pick a standard cut — say 36 in off a 24 in roll — and count those as sheets.
By the pound
Bulk packing paper is often sold by weight. The number of sheets in a pound depends on the paper’s weight and size, which vary between brands, so a conversion from one brand doesn’t hold for another. If the package lists a sheet count as well, plan with that.
Paper Sheets vs Rolls FAQ
- Are packing paper rolls cheaper than sheets?
- Sometimes per square foot, but compare by area: divide each pack’s total area by its price.
- How many sheets are in a pound of packing paper?
- It depends on the paper weight and sheet size, which vary by brand. Check the package for a sheet count.
- Can I use smaller sheets for glasses?
- Yes — small items waste less on small sheets. It is plates and platters that need sheets big enough to fold round.
- What size is standard moving paper?
- 24 × 36 in is a common size, but packs vary. The label gives the size; enter it in the calculator rather than assuming.
- Does the calculator handle rolls?
- Count a roll as sheets of the size you will cut, and enter that sheet size. The estimate is then in your cut pieces.
