Mattress Sizes and the Doorways They Clear
Mattresses go through doorways on their long edge, so the opening only has to be as wide as the mattress is thick — but as tall as it is wide. That makes door height, not width, the limit for most mattresses, and it is why a king can get stuck where a longer California king doesn’t. This guide puts the standard sizes against common door sizes so you can see where the limits are.

On edge, height is what counts
Stood on its long edge and carried head or foot first, a mattress presents its thickness across the doorway and its width up the doorway. A 12 in-thick queen, 60 in wide, needs a door at least 12 in wide and 60 in high — which almost every door is. A king, 76 in wide, needs 76 in of height.
Standard sizes against three doors
| Mattress (W × L) | 30 × 80 in door | 30 × 75 in door | 28 × 80 in door |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin (38 × 75 in) | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| Twin XL (38 × 80 in) | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| Full (54 × 75 in) | Fits | Fits | Fits |
| Queen (60 × 80 in) | Fits | Fits, 15 in of height to spare | Fits |
| King (76 × 80 in) | Fits, 4 in of height to spare | Does not fit, 1 in too tall | Fits, 4 in of height to spare |
| California King (72 × 84 in) | Fits, 8 in of height to spare | Fits, 3 in of height to spare | Fits, 8 in of height to spare |
All 12 in thick, unbent, carried on the long edge with a straight approach. Sizes are nominal US sizes; real mattresses vary by about an inch, which matters most in the King row — measure yours before relying on it.
Why a California king can beat a king
A California king is longer than a king but narrower: 72 in against 76 in. On its long edge it stands at its width, so it clears a 75 in door with 3 in to spare where the king is 1 in too tall. Carrying either one on its end instead makes the length the height, which is worse for both.
Where low doors turn up
- Basement and attic doors, and doors under stairs, are often lower than 80 in.
- Older houses can have shorter interior doors, or frames that have settled.
- A threshold or a door closer takes height off an otherwise standard door — measure from the top of the threshold to the lowest point overhead.
Mattress Sizes and Doorways FAQ
- Will a queen mattress fit through any door?
- Almost any standard door: on its long edge it needs only its thickness across and 60 in of height.
- Why does a king mattress get stuck?
- Because on edge it stands 76 in tall, and low doorways, thresholds, and closers can leave less than that.
- Does mattress thickness matter in a doorway?
- Only across the opening, and only for very thick mattresses in narrow doors. Height is the usual limit.
- Is a split king easier to move?
- Yes. A split king is two Twin XL-size halves, each 38 in wide, which fit through almost any door on edge.
- What about a mattress in a box?
- The box is small enough for nearly any doorway; check the room it will be unpacked in instead.
