How Much Each Inch of Box Size Adds to DIM Weight
Adding an inch to a box doesn’t add a fixed amount of dimensional weight. The extra inch adds a whole slice of volume, and the size of that slice depends on the other two sides. Working out the weight of one slice shows which dimensions are worth the effort of cutting down.

One slice of box
Add 1 in to a box’s height and you add a slice as big as its length × width. On a 16 × 12 in footprint that slice is 192 in³; at a divisor of 139 it weighs 192 ÷ 139 = 1.38 lb.
On a 20 × 16 in footprint the slice is 320 in³, which is 2.30 lb per inch. The bigger the face, the heavier each inch on the side that grows it.
Per-inch and per-centimeter figures
| Face of the box | Divisor | Added per inch or cm |
|---|---|---|
| 16 × 12 in | 139 in³/lb | 1.38 lb per inch |
| 20 × 16 in | 139 in³/lb | 2.30 lb per inch |
| 16 × 12 in | 166 in³/lb | 1.16 lb per inch |
| 40 × 30 cm | 5,000 cm³/kg | 0.24 kg per cm |
These are before rounding. With weights rounded up to the next whole pound, a 1.38 lb change can show up as 1 lb or 2 lb on the bill.
All three sides at once
Growing every side compounds. A 12 × 12 × 12 in box is 1,728 in³, or 12.43 lb at 139. A 13 × 13 × 13 in box is 2,197 in³, or 15.81 lb — 3.37 lb more for one extra inch each way.
The same works in reverse: shaving half an inch off every side of a box can save more than taking a whole inch off one side.
Using this to prioritise
- Trim the side perpendicular to the box’s largest face first: each inch there removes the most volume.
- Check where rounding steps fall, so a trim carries the weight below a whole pound or kilogram.
- Remember the product’s actual weight is a floor the billed weight won’t go below.
DIM Weight per Inch FAQ
- How much dimensional weight does an inch add?
- The other two sides multiplied, divided by the divisor. On a 16 × 12 in face at 139, each inch of height adds about 1.38 lb.
- Why does the same inch add different amounts on different boxes?
- Because the inch adds a slice whose area is the box’s other two sides. A bigger face makes a bigger slice.
- How much does a centimeter add with a 5,000 divisor?
- A 40 × 30 cm face is 1,200 cm³ per centimeter of depth, which is 0.24 kg at 5,000 cm³/kg.
- Is it better to cut one side by an inch or all sides a little?
- Compare the volume removed. Small cuts on every side often remove more volume than one larger cut, because each cut removes a full slice.
- Does rounding change these figures?
- The figures are exact. Rounding up to whole pounds or kilograms means a small change might not alter the billed weight, or might cross a step and change it by a whole unit.
