Adjustable Curtain Rod Sizes Explained

Most store-bought curtain rods telescope: one tube slides inside another, so a single rod covers a range of lengths. Picking the right range is mostly about where your length sits in it. This guide lists common ranges, explains how to choose, and covers support brackets for longer rods.

How adjustable rods work

An adjustable rod has a narrower inner tube that slides out of a wider outer one, and it can be set anywhere between its shortest and longest length. At full extension less tube overlaps, so the rod is at its least stiff; that is why longer ranges come with, or call for, a center support.

Common ranges

Typical ranges; brands vary, so check the package.

Choosing a range

Pick a range that includes your length, ideally not right at its longest end. A 64 in rod sits comfortably in a 48–84 in range. An 84 in rod falls at the top of 48–84 in and inside 66–120 in, so the longer range will be stiffer at that length.

Brackets and supports

  • End brackets hold the rod at each side; their projection sets the return depth.
  • Center brackets stop longer rods sagging; the instructions say when they are needed.
  • Curtain rings can’t pass a center bracket, which matters for curtains that draw all the way across.
  • Fix brackets into studs or with anchors rated for the curtains’ weight.

Cut-to-size and custom rods

Fixed rods that you cut to length, and custom rods made to a measurement, avoid the overlap of a telescoping rod and suit very wide or bay windows. They are worth considering when your length falls outside common ranges or you want the rod at an exact width.

Adjustable Rod Sizes FAQ

What size curtain rod do I need for a 64 inch length?
A rod whose range includes 64 in, such as a common 48–84 in adjustable rod.
Is it okay to extend an adjustable rod to its maximum?
It works, but the rod is least stiff at full extension. If your length is at the top of one range, the next range up is usually sturdier.
When does a curtain rod need a center support?
Longer rods usually do; the rod’s instructions give the length. Heavy curtains make it more important.
Are adjustable rod sizes the same between brands?
No. Common ranges are similar, but always check the package for the actual shortest and longest length.
What if my window is wider than any adjustable rod?
Look at custom or connected rods, or a ceiling track, which can span longer distances with supports.
